How is everyone feeling about the Fergie/Josh Duhamel split? I have mixed emotions about it. I like them both and thought they were generally good for each other (with obvious lapses) so I was bummed they split. But I never thought they’d stay together in the first place so I was bummed but not surprised. It’s very confusing. Apparently, Josh moved out last spring but they live blocks from each other and are committed to raising their son, Axl, together. At the time of the split announcement, they were telling everyone how well they got along and that they were friends who loved each other just not romantically. But now, Fergie is crying on The Wendy Williams show so there must be more going on:
Fergie is opening up about splitting from Josh Duhamel after eight years of marriage. “It wasn’t my plan,” the singer, 42, said in a preview clip for The Wendy Williams Show’s Thursday, October 26, episode. “I wanted to stay married forever.”
Through tears, Fergie explained that she “loves Josh” as he is the father of their 4-year-old son, Axl. “We forever have that project together,” she said. “And we’re doing the best we can.”
Although the couple announced their split in September, they had parted ways months earlier. “They had been having problems for the past year,” a source told Us Weekly at the time. “He moved out around early spring.”
A second source added: “They are both really good people and committed to their son, but they are too different to make it work.”
In the wake of their separation, the singer is adamant that there’s no bad blood between the pair. “We’re great friends, Josh and I, there’s so much love that we have for each other,” she told Entertainment Tonight last month. “We really like each other, we have fun with each other. We’re just not a romantic couple anymore.”
If you watch the clip, Fergie said, “I love Josh. He’s the father of my son.” They were two distinct thoughts, not “I have to love Josh because he’s my son’s father,” which is how it read to me in this article. As was stated, Fergie did get emotional when speaking about wanting to be married forever. What was unclear to me is whether she thought she’d always be married to Josh or just that she’d never get divorced in general. I get that they are divorcing and that probably sucks. I guess I am stuck on her comment that it wasn’t her plan. Divorce isn’t anyone’s plan going down the aisle, so is she saying their parting is on Josh? Back to the clip, when she delivers the comment about Axl being a project, I think it’s just an unfortunate word choice. And it’s not a bad word choice, but it is an unusual way to refer to your offspring. However, I’m considering renaming my kids Project M and Project F and retroactively submitting them to my fifth-grade science fair. Take that, Sam “look at my stupid volcano” Jones!
Fergie is moving forward, though. She still has her new album, Double Duchess, to promote. And even though she is still not ready to date yet, she understands that things have changed in the way folks meet today. Fergie admitted dating apps are foreign to her as they rose in popularity while she was married. She said this at a dinner for Bumble Bizz, a new feature to the women-driven dating app, Bumble, that focuses on business and network connections. Whatever Fergie decides to do, she doesn’t need to be in any rush. She’s got a lot going on and she’s not even a year separated. I hope she takes all the time she needs.
