Scottish surgeon and lecturer who was best known as an inspiration for the literary character Sherlock Holmes.

Before Fame

In 1859, he received an MD from the University of Edinburgh Medical School.

Trivia

He wrote the book "Manual of the Operations of Surgery" that was published in 1866.

Family Life

He was the son of Cecilia Barbara Craigie and Benjamin Bell. He had three children with his wife, Edith Katherine Erskine.

Associated With

The BBC television series Murder Rooms: The Dark Beginnings of Sherlock Holmes was based off of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's time as Bell's clerk.
