Sam Heughan on people thinking he’s gay: ‘I mean, it’s not true, but I don’t really care’

The TV Bafta Awards 2018

Sam Heughan is not my fave. But I realize he has a fanbase, so here you go. I tend to think he looks like a pretty version of Frankenstein’s Monster… with a bangin’ body. I also tend to think that his employers and his publicist want him to stay very, very deep in the closet. But in this day and age, we can and should take his word for it that he’s straight. Which brings me to this interview he did with a LGBTQ+ blog, all to promote his role in The Spy Who Dumped Me (he plays “the gay friend” I think?). Some highlights:

Whether he’s aware of his gay fanbase: “I’m not aware! But I hope there is one. And if there isn’t, then we need to make one.

Why he’s played so many gay roles throughout his career: “Those parts are really interesting because there’s this grey area. These characters are not always fully aware of their situation or in control of their situation, and they have very strong feelings and very strong emotions and tend to be really interesting parts.

On people calling him gay, and whether he takes it as a compliment: “Yeah, I guess. I played a few gay parts and maybe people might make assumptions about me. I mean, it’s not true, but I don’t really care. I think, whatever, if that’s what you’re gonna pick out from someone’s performance.

He takes being called “gay” a compliment: “I love that world. My makeup artist in the U.K. is very camp and she brings out the best camp side in me.

If he’s a straight guy, then his answers are pretty cool – “I mean, it’s not true, but I don’t really care.” It’s 2018 and actors don’t give a damn if you think they’re gay and they’re not going to protest it loudly if you say they are. Of course, there’s always the possibility that he’s a straight guy who has spent his whole career queerbaiting the gay audience too, which is something a lot of the younger entertainers are doing these days. I have no idea – I don’t know the man and I’ll take him at his word.
